What is Halo (Salt) Therapy?
It’s our one-year anniversary at Salthaus, and we are excited to share with you what halotherapy—aka salt therapy—is, the incredible benefits, and how it’s an easy way to start your wellness journey!
Let’s begin with some salty history—it’s interesting, we promise! Back in 1843, a Polish physician realized salt mine workers did not experience the respiratory issues or lung diseases that distressed other miners. Then, almost 100 years later, a German doctor discovered the health of his patients had improved after they hid in salt caves to avoid bombs during World War II. The power of salt has been valued since the days of Cleopatra—and halotherapy has been used across the globe to improve stress levels, immunity, and sleep regulation, and administer a plethora of other benefits.
So...what exactly is halotherapy? Don’t worry, we hadn’t heard of it either until we were introduced by family and friends a few years ago. We were instantly impressed by how easy it is to enjoy salt therapy (no need to change clothes), and the numerous benefits this wellness treatment offers (halotherapy can help over 30 health conditions). We immediately felt others needed to know about this amazing treatment, yet we wanted to modernize the experience, make it social and fun, so Salthaus was founded: New York City's first standalone modern salt room. We’ve created an urban oasis that provides salt therapy, a 100% natural treatment available to all ages. Here are some of our favorite benefits:
Reduces stress and anxiety;
Improves skin conditions; and
Enhances athletic recovery and performance.
(We’ll get more into the science behind these benefits in our next post!)
So, how exactly does the therapy work? The halo rooms at Salthaus recreate the microclimate of an Eastern European salt cave, circulating dry, salty air throughout the space. Our halogenerator grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into micro-particles that reach the deepest part of your lungs as you breathe, and absorb any bacteria and pollutants present. This treatment is anti-inflammatory—benefitting your immune and respiratory systems—and helps alleviate colds, allergies, sinuses or headaches, and asthma. The salt that comes in contact with your skin aids in balancing the skin’s pH levels and reducing inflammation, which can provide relief for conditions such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis.
One of the best parts of halotherapy is that a halo session is as simple as could be! You come to our studio dressed as you are, and we only ask that you leave your shoes and technology in the lockers provided. Once you get comfortable in one of our salt rooms—inspired by the natural caves and filled with Himalayan salt—you sit and inhale the salty air deep into your lungs. Clients enjoy guided meditation, reading, or just taking the time to reset and disconnect. Most find that the night of your session you’ll sleep like a baby!
Salthaus is a wellness destination in New York CIty where clients can enjoy the benefits of salt therapy and embark on a journey to explore other wellness modalities. We want each of our clients to know they are part of our larger wellness community, and we are here to help you carve out time in the day for self-care. Prioritize you and what you need today to help you feel better!
